Overflowing gutters outside Children Hospital trouble visitors

KARACHI: The overflowing gutters in front of the Sindh Government Children Hospital, North Karachi, have been causing inconveniences to visitors as well as medical staff for last several weeks.

An administrative official of Singh Govt Children Hospital told that rainwater got accumulated on the road turning it into a pond as the drains in always remained choked. He said overflowing gutters and stagnant sewerage water is causing grave nuisance to patients and their attendants.

He informed that about 1500 children are brought to the OPDs and emergency department of Sindh’s second largest children healthcare facility but overflowing gutters have created problems for patients and affected easy movement of people around the hospital.

A visit to the hospital tells volumes about the lack of seriousness of civic authorities towards its sanitary conditions. This hospital caters the needs half of child population of Karachi but unfortunately authorities concerned are not paying heads to resolve its sanitary issues.

The overflowing gutters at main gate of hospital also create hurdles for shifting of patients through ambulances. The doctors, paramedical staff and staff nurses also face great hardships due to stagnant sewerage water.

Medical Superintendent, Sindh Government Children Hospital, North Karachi, Dr Asif Zaman, while talking to reporter, said the maintenance of gutters and drains is the responsibility of civic institutions. He said the administration has already requested the KMC to maintain the overflowing gutters in front of the health facility to end miseries of staff and visitors.
