Self-exiled PPP MPA released after arrest at Islamabad airport

KARACHI: Self-exiled Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MPA Sharjeel Inam Memon was released after arrest at Islamabad Airport on late Saturday night. The former Provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Memon was taken into custody by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) when he reached the airport from Dubai along with Excise and Taxation Minister Mukesh Chowla, Faiyyaz Bhat, Taimour Talpur and Imdad Patafi.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has released a senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sharjeel Inam Memon after the investigation in Islamabad. Sharjeel was detained over corruption allegations. Memon was self-exiled for several months. Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah on Sunday denied that Pakistan Peoples Party was supporting its Sharjeel. Memon’s lawyer said that the ex-minister, who is facing several cases of corruption, would surrender before Islamabad High Court on Monday.

The NAB chairman had filed a reference against Memon in connection with alleged misconduct in payments regarding advertising campaigns. The reference said that the investigation was conducted regarding corruption and corrupt practices in the advertisement awareness campaigns on TV and FM channels between July 2013 and June 2015 and it was found that the accused acted in connivance with each other resulting in a loss of to the national exchequer.

Sharjeel Memon was alleged of issuing contracts to favourite advertising agencies at exorbitant rates even without confirming the market rates. Besides, the former information minister directly approved the media plan submitted by the advertising agencies.
