Many CHK doctors violate medical ethics, prescribe very costly medicines

KARACHI: Breach of medical ethics is once again on the rise in the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK)< especially it is Accident & Emergency Department, as many doctors prescribe unnecessary costly medicines to the patients, despite the fact that many of these medicines are available at E &A Department. Surprisingly, some of these doctors or their family members also own busy medical stores in the vicinity of the major hospital of the city Reliable sources at Emergency Department told, that some doctors performing duties in the Emergency Department of hospital in evening and night shifts are prescribing unnecessarily costly medicines to patients to help boosting sales of some favorite pharmaceutical companies for the sake of commission. Patients belonging to poor and low income families suffer a lot due to this breach of medical ethics. The doctors involved in this malpractice also run their private medical stores, laborites and other businesses in the vicinity of the hospital. They have already amassed millions at the cost of poor patients. However, the hospital administration has failed to control these illegal activities despite several complains of patients' attendants to administrative officers. Although a sufficient stock of medicine is available to treat patients who are brought to the hospital with emergency treatment requirements but unfortunately these doctors often prescribe expensive medicines to be bought from some particular medical stores situated outside the hospital. However, if the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), FIA, Anti-corruption department of Sindh government and health department start probe to see who owns and runs private pathological laboratories, blood banks, medical stores and some exploitative ambulance services, the results would be surely eye-opener. Medical Superintendent, Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), Dr Zulfiqar Ali Siyal, said strict action will be taken against the doctors involved in this malpractice. He said there is no shortage of drugs in his hospital. He urged the patients' attendants to contact the 'Control Room' of the hospital for any complaint about the unavailability of medicines.
