KARACHI: Dr Ruth KM Pfau, Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) administration has directed the heads of its departments to send data of deaths reported in emergency and other wards to know the actual causes of mortalities.

Addition Medical Superintendent, CHK, Dr Arif Niaz, while talking to PPI, said heads of all departments have been directed to forward data of deaths reported in the health facility. He said as some departments have not been maintaining the data of admitted patients and deaths since several months; therefore, in-charges of these wards were issued directives in this regard.

He informed that Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) meetings are also not being held in the hospital to know actual causes of deaths reported in the healthcare facility. He explained that Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) meetings are held to review deaths as a part of professional learning.

Dr Arif Niaz said M&M meetings are being held on regular basis in private sector health facilities and some government hospitals to review deaths reported in emergency and others department.

He said the CHK management has also decided to organise Mortality and Morbidly meetings in Sindh’s largest tertiary-care hospital to check if patients are dying as a consequence of unsafe clinical practices.
