ISLAMABAD:National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Member Disaster Risk Reduction Idris Mehsud has said that capacity building of disaster management authorities and organizations is crucial and only solution for effective disaster risk management and mitigation.
He added that experience sharing with relevant organizations and other institutions should be made in order to enable them playing their role in disaster and any untoward situation.
In time Response and Recovery during natural calamities and disasters is necessary and therefore all impediments should be resolved for quick disaster management,” he said at the Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop on Evaluation of Program Activities conducted in 2018 organized by National Humanitarian Network (NHN), said a statement here on Thursday.
The speakers at the workshop also emphasized that strong communication and cooperation among the disaster management authorities is crucial to cope with the impacts of natural and manmade disasters and any emergency situation.
The one day workshop had held various technical deliberations and group discussions to mull over strategies, concepts and future course of action to deal with any disaster and emergent situation.
There should be national network of organizations working at the union council or local level that are creating awareness among the general public regarding disaster management. Awareness is the key component of disaster management endeavours,” the speakers said.
The representatives from NDMA member Disaster Risk Reduction Idris Mehsud, National Humanitarian Network (NHN) coordinator Sana Zulfaqar, Rescue 1122 officers, Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) Country Manager Sajid Naeem, FATA Disaster Management Authority representative Dr Irfan, journalists and faculty members of various universities’ Disaster Management Department participated in the workshop.
The suggestions presented by the participants in various group discussion held mentioned that there was need to take individual, institutional and collective steps for effective disaster management.
