Court: (CJP dissatisfies over steps taken to check population growth)

ISLAMABAD:A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has expressed dissatisfaction over steps taken so far at the federal and provincial levels to check the population growth.

Hearing a case pertaining to population growth on Tuesday, the Chief Justice regretted that no serious step has been taken to raise awareness amongst masses on the matter.

Declaring the growing population a time bomb, Mian Saqib Nisar said the country has no resources to provide better education, health and other amenities to its population.

He emphasized that a uniform policy needs to be evolved to check current trend of population growth.

Earlier, the additional attorney general informed the court that the population is increasing at the rate of two point four percent.

He said Pakistan is now fifth most populous country and the population will double in the next three decades if the current trend of population growth persisted.

Hearing Tayyaba torture case, the Chief Justice said a law needs to be framed for the protection of children. Earlier the bench was informed that suspended judge Raja Khurram Ali Khan has been arrested in Tayyaba case.
