Delay in promotions irks Karachi doctors

KARACHI: The doctors working in healthcare facilities of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) have said they had been deprived of promotions to next grades under four-tier formula despite the passage of several years.

Approximately 250 doctors from Grade-17 to 20 have been deprived of promotions for last seven years due to the apathy of Medical & Health Services Department of KMC. These doctors working at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases, Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, Spencer Eye Hospital and other health facilities are waiting for promotions under the four-tier formula.

Sources at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital told PPI that delay in promotions had caused unrest among health practitioners. They said under the four-tier formula, doctors appointed in Grade-17 should be promoted to next grade after completion of seven years service while promotions from Grade-18 to 20 should take place after every five years on regular basis.

Senior Director Medical & Health Services of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Dr, Birbal Genani was not available for comments.
