Experts suggest independent masterplan department for Karachi


Karachi:Experts on architectural sector and eminent town planners have suggested an independent master plan department for Karachi for its beautification and improvement of the infrastructural development in accordance with the future requirements. They emphasized upon developing and implementing a feasible plan for removal of encroachments/buildings and rehabilitation of affectees. They also suggested effective steps for preservation of cultural heritage.

They were speaking at an urban panning conference entitled, “Transforming Karachi”, organized by the directorate of urban policy and strategic planning, P and D department, Government of Sindh. Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah, the Chief Secretary Sindh chaired the conference.

The conference was arranged under the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Advocate General Sindh Salman Talibbudin briefed the participants about the salient features of the conference.

Welcoming the participants, the Chief Secretary Sindh noted that it is highly appreciable that eminent urban master planners and noted architects have encouraged us for achieving a noble task. We shall resolve the issue to beautifying Karachi for revival of it past glory. He invited to participants for their recommendation in respect of removal of encroachments, building and rehabilitation of Karachi.

Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah maintained that by the grace of Allah, the Almighty, the Sindh Government has been succeeded to get vacated hundreds of public parks in Karachi in association with district administrations.

He told that 822 parks out of total 1578 have now made functional while efforts are being taken for removal of encroachments from 135 other parks, as well. He said remaining 756 parks are being functionalized.

The participants also made recommendation on land use conversion and restoration of public parks, playgrounds and public amenities. The also stressed an efficient public transport system including revival of KCR (Karachi Circular Railway), as per a comprehensive mass transit system. The recommendations were also recorded for preparation of masterplan of Karachi. The masterplans made earlier for Karachi in 1922, 1958, 1973-85, and 1996-2000 were also discussed.

The participants included Yasmen Lari, Shah Bano, Tasneem Siddiqui Chairman SAIBAN, Asad I. A Khan, Fazal Noor, Hamier Soomro, Shahid Abdullah, Prof Anila Naeem, Prof. Dr. Mir Shubbar Ali. Dr. Nasir, Vice Admiral (Retd) Syed Arifullah Hussaini, Dr. Noman Ahmed, and the officers of Sindh Government including Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shalwani and Director General Urban Policy and Strategic Planning Sindh Faisal.
