Five workers killed, two injured as elevator collapses in Karachi

KARACHI: Five workers were killed and two others injured when an elevator of an under construction-building collapsed in Karachi’s Boat Basin area on Saturday.

According to rescue sources, five laborers were killed when an elevator of the building collapsed in Boat Basin area, while two other sustained severe injuries in the incident. Those killed include Abdul Rehman, Asad, Faisal, Riazul Haq and one other who could not be identified immediately.

A part of the building also fell. The reason of the accident could not be ascertained yet.

Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) South said that the deaths occurred due to elevator collapse when labourers were busy in installing mirrors on the under construction building.

Further investigation was underway to find out reasons for the accident in other aspects, he said. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and directed authorities to provide facilities to the affected laborers. He also sought a detailed report from the authorities about the accident.

The bodies and injured were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate medical Center for autopsies and treatment, respectively.
