Former PM Gilani stopped from leaving country

February 6, 2019

LAHORE:The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) late last night stopped former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Yousaf Raza Gillani from flying to Seoul at Lahore airport.

Gilani reached the Allama Iqbal International Airport here late Tuesday night to board a flight for South Korea via Bangkok to attend a conference. However, his name was on the no-fly list. Gillani was intending to fly by a Thai Airways flight to attend World Summit to be held by the Universal Peace Federation on February 10.

The FIA officials told Gillani that he could not fly abroad as his name was on the Exit Control List (ECL).

Gillani is a Pakistani politician who served as 18th Prime Minister of Pakistan from 25 March 2008 until his retroactive disqualification and ouster by the Supreme Court

of Pakistan on 26 April 2012. He currently serves as the vice-chairman of the central executive committee of the Pakistan Peoples Party.

Media reported Gilani is facing several corruption cases and last week, the accountability court of Islamabad rejected his plea seeking exemption from personal appearance in a case related to awarding alleged illegal advertising contract to a private agency. He is accused of misusing authority to illegally grant Messrs Midas an advertising contract in contravention of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority rules.
