JI for free, fair probe

Lahore: Ameer, Jamaat e Islami, Pakistan, Senator Sirajul Haq, has said that a transparent and independent investigation warranted the Prime Minister to immediately step down and vacate his high public office.

Talking to the media after attending the Senate session on Friday, he said that the only respectable course for Nawaz Sharif was to resign and provide an atmosphere for independent enquiry.

Sirajul Haq termed April 20 as a historic day in the country’s history when the apex court had ruled that the government of the day and the Prime Minister were not clean. He said that two of the learned judges of the court had declared the Prime Minister disqualified, not eligible to hold his office in the light of the articles 62 and 63 of the constitution. The other three judges, he said, had not differed from the views of the two colleagues but had suggested further investigation.

The JI chief noted that the rulers of many countries facing allegations after the Panama leaks, had stepped down voluntarily and presented themselves for accountability showing great moral courage.

The JI chief said that the court decision was not the goal for which the JI had been striving, but it was a step towards success. He said the JI was justified in demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation as his presence in his office would not provide an atmosphere in which the state institutions could carry on independent enquiry. Actually, he said the present and the past rulers of the country had weakened the state institutions to an extent that the masses could not trust these any more.

Sirajul Haq further argued that the foreign dignitaries visiting the country during the next couple of months would be meeting a Prime Minister bearing a stigma while the Premier if he went abroad during the investigation, would also have the same feelings.
