KU lecture on drilling techniques for geologists

KARACHI: Karachi University’s Department of Geology in collaboration with Karachi University Geology Alumni Association at Department of Geology organized a lecture entitled Introduction to Drilling Techniques for Geologists on Tuesday.

Addressing at the lecture CEO Sparks Petroleum, Oman Shakeel Laique Khan said this is a perception that petroleum industry is a male dominated field which is not completely correct, there are also ample career opportunities for females in the petroleum industry since there are many departments of petroleum companies where females could work. Certification is pivotal for a graduate of geology or petroleum, only graduates who come in the market with certification alongside their degrees secure starting jobs on good levels while graduates without certification end up getting low level jobs and need some years of hard work for promotion. Drilling is one of the key elements of petroleum industry which needs great training and potential.

Former Vice Chancellor, Federal Urdu University Prof. Dr. Syed Iqbal Mohsin welcomed the guest speaker and said that completing a degree in geology is not enough these days, students must also need a certification to meet the contemporary needs of the industry. Industry requires individuals who are well versed with practical knowledge with their degrees which only comes through certification or practical experience of the industry.

“This is a wrong impression that due to the oil crisis, the jobs are shrinking in petroleum industry, on the contrary it’s the best moment for petroleum companies to explore new oil fields. The job market of petroleum industry is highly competitive, only competent individuals survive here. Despite the culture of references in getting jobs, still merit prevails in the long run,” Dr. Iqbal added.

Chairman, Department of Geology KU Prof. Dr. Shahid Naseem delivered the vote of thanks speech while Custodian of KUGAA Amanat Ullah Khan delivered the welcome note.
