LHWs end protest after govt assurance

KARACHI: The Lady Health Workers (LHWs) on Thursday, who were protesting against non-payment of their salaries, ended their protest after government assurance of early payment.

Earlier, the protesting LHWs staged a demonstration and sit-in at the PIDC Chowrangi near CM House Karachi demanding payment for their five-month pending salaries.

Scores of lady health workers under the banner of All Pakistan Lady Health Workers Welfare Association (APLHWWA) staged the protest. They gathered at Polo Ground from where they marched towards the CM House, but they were stopped by the law enforcement agencies (LEA).

Central Chairperson, APLHWWA, Bushra Arain said LHWs have been deprived their salaries for last five months and they are facing financial problems.

She said high-ups of health department had introduced a biometric verification system for LHWs, but they are reluctant to pay pending salaries of healthcare workers.

She said LHWs will boycott the anti-polio drive if their pending salaries are not release in a few days and the Sindh government and secretary health Sindh would be held responsible.

Later, they ended their protest demonstration peacefully after assurance from Deputy Secretary Health (Admin) Sindh Muhammad Ibrahim that their salaries will be deposited in their account within two days.
