ISLAMABAD: The government has notified that Omar Sarfraz Cheema ceases to hold the office of Governor Punjab with immediate effect.

The notification issued by the Cabinet Division on late Monday night states that the Speaker of Punjab Assembly shall perform functions of Governor Punjab as Acting Governor till the appointment of a new Governor in accordance with Article 104 of the Constitution.

Omar Sarfaraz Cheema was de-notified as Governor Punjab hours after President Dr Arif Alvi rejected to approve Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s summary to remove Omar Cheema from his post.
