Pakistan has an edge against West Indies: Sallu

Karachi: Former chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed Sallu Thursday said that Pakistan will have better chances to win the Test, which begins Friday in Kingston, as the visiting team has a better side as compared to host West Indies.

“We have depth in batting-line and have a better bowling-line so I think our team will have as edge against West Indies,” former Test batsman Sallu told reporter.

He added that Pakistan defeated West Indies 2-0 in UAE in the Test series when the two teams last met and winning T20 and ODI series during the ongoing tour would also give Pakistan psychological edge.

“We have a very good batting-line. I feel if Ahmed Shahzad is out of form then Shan Masood could be given a chance. However, Shahzad also has experience and may be team management might think this way. Moreover, we have Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan in the middle. There would be Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed and Shadab Khan could also bat. So, we have a good batting-line,” he said.

He said that this Test series would mark the end of brilliant players Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan – the duo who performed brilliantly for the country one way or another.

“Younis Khan is on the verge of completing ten thousand runs in Test cricket, which is a great feat. Meanwhile, Misbah took the reins of the team, when it was facing its worse scandalous period, and led it to the top of the Test ranking, which is also a great achievement. These two players will always be remembered by Pakistan cricket fans,” he said.

Sallu further said that if pitch seems to be supportive for spinners then Pakistan could also field three spinners, namely Shadab Khan, Mohammad Asghar and Yasir Shah.

However, if two spinners have to be employed then Shadab and Asghar should be picked in order to increase variety in the bowling line.

“Hopefully, Hasan Ali recovers from injury by tomorrow and plays in the first Test. Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz could also play important role if the track supports pacers,” he added.

Meanwhile, he said that Pakistan should not take West Indies lightly as the team has players like Vishal Singh, Jason Holder, Cummis and Bishoo.
