Rangers arrest nine suspected extortionists

KARACHI: Sindh Rangers and police on Saturday claimed to have arrested nine suspects allegedly involved in extortion activities in the metropolis.

According to a rangers spokesperson, on the complaints related to extortion of money from Lyari and Kharadar area traders, rangers constituted special teams for arresting of the accused.

After intelligence reports and strict surveillance with city police, they raided the areas and apprehended nine suspects, Muhammad Sohail alias Jan, Sameer Hussain Sheik alias Ali, Muhammad Kabeer alias Kala, Muhammad Ayub alias Ali Bahi, Syed Muhammad Abbas alias Langara, Muhammad Anis alias Kofta, Muhammad Zardin Fayyaz Khan and Muhammad Abid alias Azad.

During initial investigation, the arrested suspects confessed to working for Lyari’s extortion gang Ayaz Zahri group. The head of the group Ayaz Zahri and Ismail Patani were operating the group from abroad.

The arrested accused also admitted to involvement in extortion, firing on forces and a hand grenade attack on police Line in Lyari.

Weapons and animation used for collecting extortion money was also recovered from their possession. The suspects have been handed over to the police for further legal proceedings.
