SACP fails to establish HIV Treatment Centres in Karachi

KARACHI: Sindh AIDS Control Program (SACP) has failed to establish three more HIV Treatment Centres in Karachi to facilitate patients and also to reduce burden on existing centres.

The plan to set up HIV Treatment Centres in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital could not be materialized as yet due to non-cooperation of heads of these major hospitals.

Sources at SACP told PPI that although the program administration has acquired sites from heads or medical superintendents of these health facilities but SACP management has not been provided nurses and lab staff to make functional the HIV Treatment Centres in these major hospitals of the city.

The SACP has already installed equipment at expected sites of HIV/AIDS Treatment Centres of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital but poor coordination and unavailability of staff have delayed the functioning of these centres.

The administration of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital is reluctant to establish HIV Treatment Centre in their health facility due to unknown reasons. The head of hospital is using delaying tactics in this regard, said the sources.

Program Manager, Sindh AIDS Control Program (SACP), Dr Mohammad Younis Chachar, while talking to PPI, said heads of hospitals are not cooperating with program management to make functional HIV/AIDS Treatment Centres.

He informed that only Sukkur HIV/AIDS Treatment Centre is ready for formal opening and training of doctors is under way to make operational this centre while sites have been obtained to establish HIV/AIDS Centres of Hyderabad and Shaheed Benazirabad districts. He further informed that Mirpurkhas Hospital administration is also not coordinating with SACP for setting up a HIV Treatment Centre.

When contacted, Senior Director Medical & Health Services, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Dr Birbal Genani, said the KMC is ready to cooperate with Sindh AIDS Control Program management to establish HIV Treatment Centre at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The HIV Treatment Centers are already operating in Civil Hospital Karachi, Indus Hospital Karachi, Aga Khan Hospital and two in Larkana district under the supervision of SACP to control the prevalence of HIV/AIDS disease in Sindh province.
