Shaheed Benazir Bhutto scholarship for launched for minority students.

KARACHI: Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh for Minority Affairs Dr. Khatu Mal Jeevan said on Wednesday that today is proud movement for Sindh government as ‘Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto Scholarship for Students of Minority Community’ was being formally launched, adding that Rs 35 million cheques would be distributed among 2400 talented and needy students on merit this year.

He said this while addressing the ceremony organized to disburse scholarship cheques among the students belonging to Karachi division. Mal said this morning had brought immense pleasure and pride to him.

He said that the PPP government was taking Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto’s vision forward under the able guidance of PPPP President Asif Ali Zardari and leadership of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He said that the minority affairs department budget had been tripled during last four years, which was a historic step taken towards recognizing the important role of minorities in the progress of country.

He said that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah fully supported in making this historic day happen. He said that today 400 students from minorities were getting cheques of scholarships. In second phase, 1600 students of Hyderabad and MirpurKhas divisions would be awarded scholarships in Hyderabad, while in third phase, 400 students of Sukkur, Larkana and Shaheed Benazirabad divisions would be disbursed scholarship cheques in a ceremony which will be organized in Sukkur.

“This scholarships will be awarded annually and number of scholarships will be increased phase-wise to accommodate more and more students,” he added.

He said that Sindh government was already running scholarships to bright and deserving students of province under Sindh Education Department’s Endowment Fund for pursuing higher education and large number of students from minority community had benefited from the opportunity.

Addressing the ceremony, Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh for Social Welfare Shamim Mumtaz said that the government was taking practical steps to create brotherhood and interfaith harmony for real progress of country. She said that PPP was only party of the country which always raised the voices for rights of minorities and also took concrete measures to resolve their issues during its tenures in government.
