May 19, 2016

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday adjourned the hearing of a petition seeing measures to control incidence of obstetric fistula, a treatable pregnancy injury that had afflicted hundreds of women in the province.

SHC bench was hearing the petition filed by gynaecologist Dr Shershah Ahmed, NGO Tehreek-e-Niswan and Kiran Sohail, a mother of six children, who had developed obstetric fistula after having her first child.

The petitioners submitted that most of the hospitals in Sindh did not provide fistula treatment as over 1,500 women affected with the injury. The petitioner requested the court to hold provincial government accountable for not providing timely and adequate treatment of fistula.

The court adjourned the hearing till 2nd June 2016.

The petitioners had had submitted that despite the passage of national maternal health policies, close to 5,000 women develop obstetric fistula ever year. According to the experts, fistula can be treated through a proper surgical procedure.

The court was requested to direct the provincial government to ensure access to affordable treatment of obstetric fistula to women in Sindh, with a guarantee that at least one gynaecologist in every district be trained and equipped to provide fistula repair surgery.
