Sugarcane grower sets crop on fire as protest

Nawabshah:A sugarcane grower near here Sunday set his crop on fire as a protest against not starting the sugarcane crushing season in Sindh province.

As per details, a grower Khadim Detho of village Ismail Detho near Qazi Ahmed set his ripe sugarcane crop on fire to protest against the sugar millers who have not yet started the crushing season.

Talking to media that as per law and sugar millers are bound to start crushing season on November 1, but in Sindh province every year the crushing season is started late to exploit the growers.

The late start of crushing results in drying up of sugarcane which on one hand reduce its weight resulting in loss for the growers and on the other hand increasing its sugar content for the benefit of the millers.
