Three alleged extortionists held in Karachi

KARACHI:A gang of three extortionist was busted by the Sindh Rangers on Friday during a targeted operation in the metropolis with three of its members arrested.

According to a spokesman for the paramilitary force, on intelligence information the Rangers personnel carried out raids in Lyari and Garden areas where they arrested three suspects identified as Abdul Aziz, Majed and Sohail alias Ekram alias Sani.

During interrogations, the held suspects confessed to demand Rs3m as protection money from the owner of a medical and general store in Lyari’s Khadda Market through a telephone call and also threatened him with dire consequences in case of non-payment of demanded money. In the meantime, the suspects continued threatening the medical store owner through phone calls and threw a hand grenade in-front of the store on 1st March 2019. They also threw banned outfit pamphlets in the store.

The gang continued to threaten the store owner later; the paramilitary force took up the case and made the arrests with the help of technical assistance.

The accused also confessed to have contact with Lyari gangsters and involved in collecting extortion money from the traders in different parts of Lyari through WhatsApp.

The Rangers also claimed to have seized a hand grenade, one detonator, one Kalashnikov, one 9-MM pistol with 10 rounds, one Awan launcher, and four Awan bomb from the suspects’ possession. Further investigations are under way.
