Traffic police initiates drive against underage drivers

KARACHI: Karachi Traffic police have initiated a drive against underage drivers who are behind majority of accidents and pose a grave danger for other road users in the metropolis, said DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Sunday.

Talking to PPI, DIG Amir said that Keeping in view to protect precious human lives, Karachi Traffic Police had apprehended 751 underage drivers from different routes during the campaign initiated against them in the city.

DIG showed concern that around 70 percent of accidents occur on the roads due to negligence of untrained and underage drivers who even do not bother to wear helmet and have always been seen in racing mood in the city.

He further said they had also detained vehicles of those negligent drivers while these vehicles would now be given back to their parents on condition and after taking affidavit from them that they would not allow their children in the future to drive their bikes without reaching right age and avoid without getting proper training along with driving licence.

DIG said a large number of young motorcyclists who were underage (below 18) and driving bikes were caught by traffic police had a view that they had been allowed by their parents to commute via bikes from home to School which showed negligence of their parents. He urged parents that they should take responsibility of their children and do not put their children’s lives into risk by allowing them to drive bikes at underage or carelessly.
