31 measles cases confirmed in Karachi

KARACHI:As many as 152 suspected measles cases have been reported throughout megacity Karachi this year so far, out of them 31 children were confirmed as measles sufferers.

Deputy Director (Preventive) Directorate of Health Services, Karachi Dr Kamran Rizvi, while talking to PPI, said measles outbreak was reported Landhi area of Karachi, adding anti-measles campaign has already been launched in the high risk of union councils of Landhi including UC 9, UC 10 and UC 11.

He informed that measles vaccinations are being given to unvaccinated children while vitamin-A to already vaccinated children to boost their immunization against measles virus.

He further informed that measles cases are also being reported from Surjani and Malir areas of the city.

Measles is a highly contagious childhood infectious disease caused by the measles virus. Initial symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and inflamed eyes.

In 2018, the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), Sindh had conducted measles vaccination campaign across Sindh province from October 15 and October 27 wherein targeted 7.3 million children from 9 months up to 5 years of age were vaccinated.

Last year, measles claimed dozens of lives in Sindh province while more than 300 lab confirmed cases were also reported from the province.
