Can set up DNA lab in Karachi, if funds given, says teacher

Karachi: Concern expressed by Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar over not establishing a standard DNA testing laboratory in Sindh, Baluchistan and KPK is very much justified, says Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Karachi Prof. Dr. Kamran Azim.

He said if sufficient funds and proper training to lab staff is provided, we may also establish a most modern Forensic DNA testing laboratory at Karachi like Lahore. He emphasized that there is a need to promote education of Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology and Forensic Science in Sindh.

He said that realizing this fact, we have launched BS-Biosciences and MS-Bioinformatics degree programs at M.A.Jinnah University recently.

These views he expressed while he was addressing to an open house session held at university campus last evening for the guidance of students and their parents seeking admission in new semester at MAJU.

Dr. Kamran Azim said that DNA technology has become very important these days because people killed due to natural disaster, bomb blasts, fire, traffic accidents or criminals may be identified throw their hairs, nails, spits, sweats, dress and body touching may by easily identified with the help of this technology. He told that with the establishment of Biosciences department at MAJU, we have also established a Biosciences lab here equipped with latest technologies. He said in this lab our students may check and analysis of bacterium in water and food items enjoy facility of genetic engineering experiments and to conduct DNA test experiments with the help of PRC technique. He said that it is the first year of our Biosciences students here, later on they will be able to get education of Forensic sciences to conduct DNA tests. Dr. Kamran Azim said that on completion of Biosciences education here students will be in a position to get jobs in pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, laboratories and agriculture sector easily.

Addressing to the gathering, Associate Dean, Computing & Engineering, Dr. Asim Imdad said that our faculty in consist upon highly qualified teachers having practical experience

of working with industry. He said that computer has become a most essential part of every life now that is why we have started Computer System Engineering degree program at MAJU, enabling our youth to show excellence in this field globally.

Associate Dean, Business Administration & Social Sciences Faculty, Dr. Shujaat Mubarak said that besides importance of Science and technologies these days, Finance, Accounting, HR, Supply Chain, Projects Management and Social Sciences subjects still have their own value. He said that students of our BS-Accounting & finance, on completion of their education, will be in a position to fulfill their dreams to become Chartered Accountant or Chief Financial Officer in any reputable organization after clearing few more courses.
