Delayed crushing: Sugarcane growers warn blocking national highway

Hyderabad:Sugarcane growers under the umbrella of Sindh Abadgar Board on Thursday announced that they would block the National Highway on December 14, if the government failed to get started crushing seasons in the sugar mills of Sindh province.

Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad Press Club, Sindh Abadgar Board president Abdul Majeed Nizamani said for the sugarcane growers now enough is enough. He said sugarcane crushing that should have been started on September 01, is yet to be started in Sindh, which is a ploy to benefit the sugar mill mafia and exploit growers.

Separately, another group of sugarcane growers under the banner of Abadgar Ittehad staged a sit-in on Shahrah e Fatima in front of Shahbaz Building and demanded announcement of the sugar procurement rates in Sindh province. They warned to block the Hyderabad Bypass if their demands are not met.

However, Sindh Cane Commissioner held talks with the protestors and assured them that notification for support price of sugarcane in Sindh would be announced in three days.
