Gilgit-Baltistan’s four districts hit by acute water shortage

GILGIT: Drinking water shortage has once again hit the four districts of Gilgit-Baltistan as a result, area people are facing trouble since a month.

The residents of Gilgit city, including Yaseen Colony, Lalik Colony, Ayoub Colony, Zulfiqarabad, Wahdat Colony, Cheeta Colony, upper Jutial and other areas in the districts of Gilgit, Astore, Hunza, and Gizar, are facing acute water scarcity due to negligence of authorities.

The residents of many localities have appealed to the authorities and relevant NGO to make effective measures for provision of clean drinking water as the issue was aggravating with each passing day in the winter season.

The people of Gilgit and Hunza are the most affected as supply line built under Agha Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) has broken down, but the authorities are taking on interest to repair it.

In district Astore, due to extreme cold weather, water freezes in pipelines which explode, says Kashif, a resident of Astore Eidgah. He appealed to District Administration to pay special attention for resolving this issue and extend relief to people.

He further said that with proper maintenance and effective management, the water supply could be kept intact in winter season.
