Health Minister inaugurates extension of SICU in CHK

KARACHI:Minister for Health and Population Welfare Department Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho on Tuesday inaugurated the extension of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK).

Chairman Edhi Foundation Faisal Edhi, Vice Chancellor Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed Qureshi, Prof Dr Tipu Sultan, Medical Superintendent, Dr Khadim Qureshi, AMS CHK Dr Rubina Bashir, Dr Ismail Memon and others present.

The capacity of beds in Surgical ICU has been increased to 14 with efforts of Head of Anesthesiology Department CHK Prof Dr Safia Zafar Siddiqui and her team.

The bed capacity has been increased with donation of Edhi Foundation’s Faisal Edhi and support of Vice Chancellor DUHS Prof Saeed Qureshi.

On this occasion, Provincial Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho appreciated the generous support Edhi Foundation and CHK administration for extension of Surgical ICU. She said cortically ill patients will be benefited from the surgical ICU.

The SICU at CHK was established at 1991 with efforts of Prof Tipu Sultan and his team. At that time, throughout this country there was no such facility in public sector hospital and initially this unit was comprised of eight beds with ventilators and multi-parameter monitors.

This facility has been available not only for the patients being treated at CHK but also for those needy patients operated in other hospitals of Sindh, Baluchistan and lower Punjab. In Surgical ICU patients are treated free of cost.
