JPMC staff warns protest against NGOs

KARACHI:A group of employees of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) is planning to hold protest against some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for allegedly extorting money from patients and staff on the pretext of services charges.

Sources say that about one dozen non-governmental organizations have been operating in JPMC for several years. They said that some of them are allegedly extorting money poor patients and employees on the pretext of service charges in different departments.

They are charging service charges for CT Scan, MRI and some lab investigations instead of providing these services free of cost. Presently, half of JPMC wards are being run by NGOs.

Young Doctors Association (YDA) Sindh, People Paramedical Staff Organization, Young Nurses Organization, Pakistan Paramedical Staff Association and other staff are planning to hold a protest against these NGOs.

An official of JPMC, wished not be named, said many wards in Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) are also being run by NGOs but they are not charging money from poor patients and staff . However, some NGOs working in JPMC are collecting money on the pretext of services charges.

Executive Director, JPMC, Dr Seemin Jamali, was not available for comments.
