KMC fails to launch fumigation drive in Karachi

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has failed to launch anti-dengue and malaria fumigation campaign in Karachi despite the fact that the malaria and dengue cases are rising day by day in the city.

Sources at Sindh Health Department told PPI that anti-dengue and malaria fumigation drive could not kick off yet despite the lapse of five months, putting scores of lives at stake in Karachi. The dengue larva is breeding rapidly due to poor sanitation condition of the city but no concrete step has yet been taken so far to control the prevalence of dengue, malaria and other vector-borne diseases.

The KMC has failed to launch anti-dengue fumigation campaign in the city over shortage of funds. Although, Prevention and Control Program for Dengue in Sindh is conducting fumigation in selective areas of Karachi but high-ups of KMC has failed to devise a strategy to control prevalence of dengue, malaria and vector borne diseases.

The monsoon season is usually leads to formation of the pockets of dirty and clean water which are the main source of dengue spread. These pockets are then used by the adult mosquito as the breeding place. The Sindh especially Karachi already affected by the dengue epidemic at this moment.

The expected sites for pockets of dengue are nurseries, graveyards, lakes, ponds, swimming pools, Tyre shops, water pumping stations/hydrants, construction cities, waste and dump areas.

A total of 451 dengue cases have been reported across from Sindh province out of them, 426 were in Karachi and 25 in rest of province. A death from dengue was also reported in Karachi this year.
