Larkana admin fails to improve water and sewerage system

LARKANA: Larkana district administration has failed to comply with the apex court’s directions for proper disposal of sewerage and provision of safe drinking water to the citizens.

In this connection, a high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Larkana Division Commissioner, Mohammad Abbas Baloch, in his office today, which was also attended by Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Larkana’s Superintendent Engineer, Deputy Commissioner Kashif Ali Tipu and PHED Executive Engineer Abdul Wahab Sahto.

The commissioner expressed annoyance over PHED failure to complete sewage schemes and establish oxidation ponds within the stipulated time. He asked PHED officials why schemes have not yet been completed despite his repeated orders. The SE informed him that a new scheme costing Rs 200 million had been prepared and its PC-1 had been approved by Sindh government while its work would soon be started so as to improve sewerage system in Larkana.

In this connection it has been learnt that a major scheme for disposal of sewerage was approved in 2014 with a cost of Rs 1400 million for improving sewerage system of Larkana which was to be completed within two years, but it could not be completed despite lapse of about five years which shows the negligence, incompetence, and inability of the PHED engineers. Sewage is still being discharged into Rice Canal along with 490 pipes installed illegally by the residents.
