MS orders enforcement infection control program at CHK

KARACHI:Medical Superintendent, Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) Dr Khadim Qureshi has directed the heads of departments to ensure safe disposal of medical waste and follow basic infection control practices in their respective wards to prevent patients and healthcare providers from hospital acquired infections (HAI).

He issued these directives during his visit to different departments to check disposal of medical waste and infection control practices. Focal Person of Sindh Health Care Commission at Civil Hospital Karachi Dr Soahil Sehto and others were present on this occasion.

Qureshi paid visit to outpatient departments (OPDs), Medical Unti-5, Pharmacy, Paediatric OPD and other departments where he inspected the infection control practices and hospital waste disposal. He said the management had already introduced a comprehensive mechanism to protect visiting patients, inpatients, patients’ attendants, doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and other support staff from contracting hospital acquired infections.

Dr Qureshi, while talking to PPI, said an important meeting with inflectional control and medical waste experts would be held on Wednesday, April 24 at CHK to chalk out a strategy to strictly implement infection control program in wards by identifying risk factors for infections, provide education of infection control to healthcare provider, decrease the burden of hospital acquired infections such as surgical site, ventilator acquired pneumonia, bloodstream infection and urinary tract infection.

He said major aim of introducing Infection Control Program in the hospital to cure the diseases, prevent from diseases and behavioral changes through awareness. He said training of doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and other support staff were being conducted to prevent them from acquiring infections.

Qureshi said professors, doctors, nurses, paramedical staff would be taken onboard to implement infection control program and disposal of medical waste in proper way in all departments of the institution.

He further informed that management had also imposed a complete ban on entry of representatives of pharmaceutical companies during OPD hours to control unethical practices and a strict action would be taken if someone found involved in unethical practice in the premises of the hospital.
