KARACHI: Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital(LGH), Karachi have been facing many problems including shortage of medicines, unavailability surgical disposals, improper sterilization of instruments, and poor functioning of Gynecology and newly established Chest Pain Unit (CPU).
Reliable sources at Lyari General Hospital told PPI that Sindh Health Department has failed to buy life-saving medicines through its Centralized Procurement Committee, causing immense problems for visiting and admit patients for two months.
Presently, no medicines are available in health facility while stock of surgical disposals used in Emergency and OT complex has already ended in the hospital.
The performance of Gynecology Department is poor and women with pregnancy-related emergencies are being referred to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi and other healthcare facilities in evening and night shifts as only normal deliveries are performed in the LGH in night hours.
The installation work of new incinerator has also stopped due to unknown reason. The medical wastage including disposable syringes, drips, needles, and other used items were not properly disposed of in the hospital. The instruments in Dental Department were being not sterilized on regular basis, said the sources.
The Thalassaemia Centre of health facility is also non-functioning although costly equipment is available there.
The Chest Pain Unit (CPU) established in Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Cardiology at Lyari General Hospital by the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) is also yet to be made operational properly.
Medical Superintendent, Lyari General Hospital Karachi, Dr Khadim Qureshi, while talking to PPI, said supply of medicines and surgical disposals has not started as yet but the hospital administration is providing drugs through local purchase.
He said new incinerator has not been installed as yet while hospital management has written a letter to the NICVD management for installation of new equipment to make the unit fully operational.
He further said strict action would be taken against doctors involved in referring the patients to other healthcare facilities.
