Sindh plans preserving famous cow, buffalo breeds

Badin:The livestock department of the Sindh government had rolled out plans to preserve the province’s two prominent cattle breeds in collaboration with the Pir Muhammad Sadiq Cattle Farm, Luari Sharif, a seminar on cattle farming was told here on Thursday.

Livestock officials told the cattle breeders that the government had already passed legislation to protect the breeds of Thari cow and Kundhi buffalo — the two prized cattle heads of Sindh. The cattle farm in Luari Sharif, district Badin, maintains these breeds in purest forms.

The seminar in Luari Sharif was attended by prominent breeders from Sindh.

“Whenever, we see beautiful animals in the country, the credit goes to Sindh,” said Ghulam Akbar Dars. “We are thankful to Pir Muhammad Sadiq Qureshi, Pir of Luari Sharif, for preserving these breeds.”

Livestock director Abdullah Sethar informed the participants that Sindh Livestock Act 2016 had been enacted to protect and preserve Thari and Kundhi animals, adding that the government has started registration of the breeding farmers’ associations.

“Sindh’s Kundhi buffalo is famous all over the world, so is the Thari cow,” Sethar said. “Both these breeds would be protected through their mother entry at Pir Muhammad Sadiq Cattle Farm, where the pure breed is preserved,” he said.

He appealed to the cattle farmers to cooperate with the government to preserve these breeds and nourish these animals. “It would not only preserve these animals but would also increase the milk production in the province,” he added.

Mir Siknadar Khan Jamali, Ahsan Bhurgari, Anwar Khan Jamali, Abdul Razzaq Dars, Ahmad Hasan Keerio, Dr Zainul Abdeen, also addressed the seminar.

Kundhi is believed to be 5,000-years-old Egyptian buffalo, which came to Sindh via Europe. Similarly, Thari cow is also indigenous to this region. It was used by the Allied forces for milk supplies on the front during the World War I.
