Spencer Eye Hospital reintroducing ‘Cornea Transplantation’

KARACHI:Spencer Eye Hospital Karachi is reintroducing Eye Cornea Transplantation (corneal grafting) surgery for patients free of cost and three to four surgeries would be performed every month in health facility.

In this regard a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar and representatives of Lions Clubs International is likely next week to re- launch cornea transplantation surgery in the oldest eye care hospital of Sindh province, being run by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

Senior Director, Medical and Health Services (MandHS) Department, KMC, Dr Birbal Genani while talking to PPI, said the Spencer Eye Hospital is launching cornea grafting surgery again after a lapse of 10 years. He said Spencer Eye Hospital had been pioneer in corneal transplant surgery in Sindh province but the service was later suspended due to lack of interest of authorities concerned of KMC.

He explained that corneal transplantation, also known as corneal grafting, is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue. He said Lions Clubs International management has agreed to donate three to four corneas to Spencer Eye Hospital every month for patients.

He further informed that Spencer Eye Hospital is reintroducing corneal grafting and MoU singing ceremony would be held next week. He cost of cornea transplant surgery is Rs70,000 to 80,000 at private eye care health facilities but this procedure would be performed free of charge at the Spencer Eye Hospital soon
