Update: Mufti Taqi Usmani survives in armed attack in Karachi

KARACHI:Religious scholar Mufti Mohammad Taqi Usmani survived in an armed attack as armed men opened fire on two vehicles in Karachi on Friday, killing two guards and injuring two others.

According to police sources, firing incidents took place on Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal Nipa flyover. Police said four unidentified armed men on two motorbikes, opened fire on the vehicles.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) East Amir Farooqi conformed, Mufti Taqi Usmani’s two guards, one a Sindh police guard, Farooq and the other belonging to a private company identified as Sanobar Khan, son of Shaukat Khan, were killed in the targeted attack. The vehicles, which belonged to Darul Uloom Korangi, were travelling together, DIG said.

Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Director Dr Seemi Jamali said that the “Security guard Sanober Khan was brought to the hospital dead. The second person injured in the attack, Maulana Aamir, was brought to JPMC with severe bullet injuries in the head and chest and has been placed on a ventilator, she added.

Officials from the crime unit and investigative teams reached the crime scene and gathered evidence.

Counter-Terrorism Department in-charge Raja Umar Khattab said, “As per initial reports, four terrorists on two motorcycles fired at the cars.”

“Mufti Usmani was targeted and his cars were fired at after recce,” the CTD in-charge said.

Karachi Police Chief Dr Amir Shaikh confirmed that Mutfi Usmani and his wife were in one of the cars targeted. He added that Mufti Usmani remained unhurt in the attack.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned the incident of firing on religious Islamic Scholar Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani.PM said attack on leading personality like Muhammad Taqi Usmani is a serious conspiracy and every effort will be made to expose this.

Governor Sindh Imran Ismail and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali took the notice of the incident and summoned reports from Karachi Police. CM Murad also ordered immediate arrest of the suspects.
