3000 Rural Internet Schools to be opened in country

Islamabad: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has launched a number of income generating programs for women, enabling them to take part in socio-economic uplift in the country.

They are being educated, how to meet their livelihood and earn a respectable life through various programs across the country, said vice chancellor of AIOU Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi while addressing a gathering on the occasion women international day.

The event was arranged by Women and Gender Study department. Chairperson of the gender study department Ms. Nomana Anjum and chairperson of home and health science department highlighted the women-related activities of the AIOU on the occasion.

AIOU has planned setting up of three thousands (3,000) rural internet schools across the country. Three schools as a Pilot Project would be opened by July next for which necessary equipment worth Rs.10 million would be provided, Dr. Sangi added.

He said services of 70,000 volunteer students of AIOU will be required to run these schools. More-over, female students will be encouraged to take part in the tree plantation campaign. The AIOU will make arrangement to plant one lac saplings during the season with their support. This is part of the income generating program, to be undertaken on self-help basis by the women throughout the country.

Dr. Sangi said the AIOU will give equal opportunity to female students for participating in various distance-learning programs.
