In a bid to tackle the escalating environmental crisis, citizens are being called upon to adopt more sustainable habits and attitudes, alongside government efforts, to improve the city and country’s ecological health and combat pollution.

This message was underscored by various speakers and experts at a lively event organized by the National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) in partnership with Naya Nazimabad to commemorate World Environment Day.

The event featured notable figures, including Muhammad Naeem Qureshi, President of NFEH; Saeed Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Management Committee; Samad Habib, Head of Naya Nazimabad; and renowned cricketer Asad Shafiq, among others.

During the proceedings, children showcased their talents through paintings, poetry, and essays aimed at raising awareness about environmental issues, aligning with this year”s World Environment Day theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

Muhammad Naeem Qureshi shed light on the grim reality that plastic waste makes up a staggering 65% of the nation’s total waste, with a concerning annual increase of 15%. He pointed out that a massive 98% of plastic bags are non-biodegradable and non-reusable, urging the populace to curb their plastic consumption.

Environmental authority Rafiul Haq emphasized the necessity of providing viable alternatives prior to implementing a ban on plastic bags and called for the stringent enforcement of applicable regulations. Saeed Ahmed championed the concept of “Zero Plastic Waste Zones” and highlighted the critical role of recycling and responsible consumption in mitigating plastic pollution.

Meanwhile, SM Talha shared a positive development, revealing that 30,000 fruit-bearing and shade-providing trees have been planted in Naya Nazimabad as part of efforts to enhance environmental sustainability.

Concluding the seminar, participants engaged in the planting of fruit-bearing trees in a local park, and awards were handed out to children who excelled in their environmental-themed contributions.
