The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has emphasized the early implementation of a free trade agreement (FTA) with Turkey, aimed at significantly increasing bilateral trade. At a meeting of the PakistanTurkey Business Council at the FPCCI Karachi headquarters on June 24, 2025, the need to strengthen economic relations between the two countries was emphasized.
FPCCI President Irfan Iqbal Sheikh, emphasizing the importance of improving trade and economic relations, said that the current figures do not reflect the potential of the strong diplomatic relations between the two countries. He advocated for greater private sector cooperation to fully exploit trade opportunities.
Senior Vice President Suleman Chawla reiterated FPCCI’s commitment to promoting business relations and appreciated Turkey’s continued support in various industries. He highlighted the mutual benefits of a strong economic partnership and encouraged both governments to implement policies that facilitate trade and investment.
Council Chairman Syed Mazhar Ali Nasir emphasized the urgent need to finalize the FTA. Despite joint membership in organizations like OIC, D8, and ECO, trade is below its potential, at around $1 billion, with Pakistan’s exports at approximately $366 million in 2024.
Nasir said that Pakistani products such as textiles, denim, sports goods, surgical instruments, and rice are wellreceived in Turkey and could significantly improve the trade balance. He emphasized the importance of improved trade routes, banking systems, and logistics to meet the expectations of the business communities of both countries.
Turkish Consul General Jamal Sangu, accompanied by Commercial Counselor Murad Ozmen, appreciated FPCCI’s efforts and expressed Turkey’s desire to enhance cooperation. They identified construction, tourism, engineering, and food processing as promising sectors for increased trade. The meeting, chaired by Nasir, also included FPCCI Vice Presidents Shabbir Mansha Chura and other prominent business leaders like Hanif Gohar and Mian Zahid Hussain.
