The Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) is advocating for increased honey exports to China through the adoption of international certification and advanced processing methods.
During a strategic planning meeting, PCJCCI President Nazir Hussain stressed the need to modernize Pakistan’s honey sector to unlock its full potential.
Hussain noted that Pakistani honey currently fetches only USD 20-25 per kilogram, but with proper certification and packaging, the price could reach USD 100. He highlighted the superior quality and affordability of Pakistani honey compared to global competitors but lamented the lack of certification that hinders its export prospects. He recommended establishing internationally recognized laboratories and large-scale processing plants to meet global benchmarks. Hussain identified China, a leading honey producer and exporter, as a key partner in providing advanced filtration and packaging technology.
Senior Vice President Brig. Mansoor Saeed Sheikh (Retd) affirmed China’s willingness to support Pakistan”s honey production infrastructure development. Chinese firms are prepared to offer expertise in processing techniques such as filtration, sterilization, and temperature regulation. With governmental support, Pakistan”s honey industry could meet the quality and moisture content standards of the Chinese market.
PCJCCI Vice President Zafar Iqbal, citing National Bank data, revealed that Pakistan exported USD 6.351 million worth of honey from July to November 2020, mainly to Saudi Arabia. He believes international certification would open doors to lucrative markets like Europe.
Secretary General Salahuddin Hanif pointed to China”s advanced certification and laboratory infrastructure as a model for Pakistan. He suggested joint ventures with Chinese companies to expedite the creation of modern testing facilities, thereby boosting production and export capabilities. Pakistan”s current honey production stands at 20,000 tons annually, a figure stakeholders believe could rise significantly with certified exports.
