The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is initiating a series of PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) projects to combat Islamabad’s persistent water challenges, including water leakage, inefficient energy use in water management, and antiquated sewage systems. A crucial meeting led by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, at CDA Headquarters on Friday, addressed these concerns. Attendees included Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, Member Finance Tahir Naeem, DG P and C, and senior officials from Islamabad Water.
The meeting centered on deploying water meters throughout the capital, curbing nonrevenue water, boosting energy efficiency of water pumps, restoring sewage lines, and fully activating the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). Authorities revealed that transaction advisory services are being procured under existing regulations to execute these projects via the PPP framework. Consultants will initially perform a thorough assessment and feasibility analyses.
Chairman Randhawa stressed that optimizing water pump and motor energy consumption would lower the CDA’s power expenses, with the resultant funds channeled back into enhancing water service provision. He also mandated the facilitation of water bill settlements through digital transactions and QR codes, alongside incorporating carbon credit acquisition into the projects for supplementary funding and environmental preservation. Furthermore, the chairman directed the establishment of specific schedules and objectives for each endeavor and the formation of a working group to guarantee rigorous oversight and successful implementation.
