The nationwide strike by goods transporters has raised fears of widespread cancellation of export orders, prompting industrial leaders to demand immediate government intervention. Faisal Moiz Khan, President of the North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI), expressed deep concern over the severe disruption in the transportation of import and export goods, warning of dire financial consequences for the business community.
In a statement today, Faisal Moiz Khan said the industrial action has halted the movement of consignments, with the most alarming consequence being the failure of exporters to deliver goods to foreign buyers as per their commitments.
The NKATI president added that due to the ongoing transport shutdown, businesses could face hefty demurrage and detention charges on cargo stuck at the ports, which is an immediate financial burden on them.
Describing the repeated strikes by transporters as in no way beneficial for the national economy, Khan urged the government to resolve the issue on a priority basis. He stressed that the administration must make it clear that any action that harms the economy will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
As a potential solution to deal with the recurring disruptions, Khan suggested launching railway freight services. He proposed running high-speed freight trains from Karachi to other parts of the country under a comprehensive strategy, which he believes would ensure the delivery of goods in less time while also significantly reducing transportation costs.
