Islamabad, December 07, 2018 (PPI-OT): Acting Chairman Senate Senator Saleem Mandviwalla in a meeting with Ambassador of Thailand has stressed upon promoting the ancient Buddhist civilisation in the northern part of Pakistan among the people of Thailand so that cultural exchanges between the two countries can receive a boost and people to contact increases.
The recently appointed Ambassador H.E. Mr. Pornpop Uampidhaya called on Acting Chairman Senate in his chamber here at the Parliament House on Thursday. The meeting was also attended by Senator Quarat-ul-Ain Marri, Chairperson of Pakistan Thailand Parliamentary Friendship Group and Senator Sitara Ayaz.
Acting Chairman Senate observed that there is a need and potential of enhancing trade in all major sectors including agriculture and food processing and Pakistan has a lot to learn from the Thai experience. He also called for promoting tourism in collaboration with Thai airline, hotel chains and other leading companies and businesses.
The Ambassador told the Acting Chairman that both countries are in the process of reaching consensus on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and Pakistan which is due to be finalised next year. Senator Saleem Mandviwalla expressed hope that the FTA will be a balanced opportunity for both countries and will help trade on both sides.
Both sides agreed on making Parliamentary exchanges a regular feature and making parliamentary groups functional in both Parliaments. The Ambassador apprised the Acting Chairman Senate that Thailand is due to have general elections early next year and the relationship between the two governments and two Parliaments will be a priority when the new Parliament and government are sworn in.
