Acting Chairman Senate, Syedaal Khan, on Thursday warmly welcomed Ms Nusrat Ghani, the Deputy Speaker of the UK House of Commons, marking a significant step towards further strengthening the long-standing bilateral relationship between Pakistan and the United Kingdom (UK).
During the meeting, both leaders discussed the expansion of parliamentary ties, shared global challenges, and explored new opportunities for deepening cooperation.
Reflecting on the strong history of Pakistan-UK relations, Syedaal Khan highlighted the mutual respect and shared perspectives on global and regional issues, democracy, pluralism, and international cooperation. ‘Our ties are based on a long-standing friendship, and we must continue to build upon that foundation,’ he noted.
The two leaders shared the structure and functional framework of the proceedings of both the Houses. The Acting Chairman emphasised that the Senate proceedings are executed in a democratic manner having equal representation from all the provinces.
He stressed that the legislative Business of the House is conducted in a transparent manner and bills are passed with majority voting. The meeting also focused on the significant economic partnership between the two countries.
Syedaal Khan highlighted the positive trajectory in trade relations, noting that UK is Pakistan’s third-largest individual export partner and second-largest overseas investor.
Nusrat Ghani emphasised that foreign investors should be provided with friendly trade opportunities. Syedaal Khan expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued investment, particularly in sectors such as financial services, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure, which have made a substantial contribution to Pakistan’s economic development.
Syedaal Khan highlighted Pakistan’s potential as an investment and trade destination. He said Pakistan offers numerous opportunities for investors, particularly with the development of the Gwadar Port and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which are transforming the region into a hub for trade and investment.
He also expressed hope for further collaboration between Pakistan and the UK in sectors such as energy, technology, infrastructure, and agriculture, with the potential to benefit both nations economically.
‘We are committed to creating an environment conducive to business and trade, and we invite UK investors to explore the vast opportunities that Pakistan has to offer,’ he concluded. The issue of conflict resolution, particularly concerning Palestine and Kashmir, was also raised during the meeting.
The Acting Chairman reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled stance on both issues, advocating for peaceful, just, and lasting solutions based on international law, human rights, and the aspirations of the affected peoples.
During the meeting, Syedaal khan held the role of British Government as significant for peaceful resolution to Palestine and Kashmir issues. He urged the British Government to take part for resolution of both the conflicts’.
‘The continued occupation and violations of human rights in Palestine and Kashmir are major obstacles to global peace,’ said Syedaal Khan.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of continued cooperation and committed to working together to ensure that the relationship between the two countries continues to grow stronger in the years to come.
