Ashraf Sehrai demands release of Kashmiri political prisoners

Srinagar, January 12, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, senior APHC leader and the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) Jammu and Kashmir, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, expressing concern over the prolonged detention of all Kashmiri political prisoners, has demanded their immediate release.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai in a statement issued in Srinagar said that most of the prisoners were illegally detained and putting hundreds into prisons was no democracy. He said, “Kashmiris have been punished for demanding their legitimate basic rights which have every international legitimacy and recognition.”

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai said that draconian laws like Public Safety Act (PSA) and Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) were invariably invoked to deny freedom of expression in occupied Kashmir. He pointed out that the occupation authorities were using all methods of coercion to suppress the Kashmiris’ freedom struggle. However, he made it clear to India that the freedom sentiment of the Kashmiri people cannot be crushed down through the use of brute force.

The Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Chairman called upon the international community to come forward in a big way and play its role in the settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations. Meanwhile, Hurriyat leader, Firdous Ahmed Shah in a statement issued in Srinagar expressed concern over the plight of the Kashmiri detainees lodged in different jails. He appealed to the world human rights organizations to impress upon India to release these prisoners forthwith.
