Muhammad Tahir Khokhar, central leader of MQM Azad Kashmir, former parliamentary leader, and former minister for tourism and transport, has said that journalism should not be silenced.
In a statement issued from MQM Azad Kashmir office today, he condemned the filing of an FIR against senior journalist Zulfiqar Butt, stating that such actions not only stifle journalism but also create resentment among the public.
Khokhar emphasized that the people of Azad Kashmir have the right to protest for their rights, and this is a hallmark of democracy. He urged the government of Azad Kashmir to reconsider such measures, which only serve to fuel public anger. He called on the authorities to ensure justice for the people and fulfill their legitimate demands.
He remarked that attempts are often made to suppress the voices of those who demand their rights. ‘The people’s voices should not be silenced, and they should be granted their rights,’ said Tahir Khokhar.
He urged the government to respect public rights and seriously consider their demands, highlighting that the prosperity and development of the public require the acknowledgment of their rightful needs and demands. Instead of silencing their voices, attention should be given to resolving their issues.
Delivering justice and protecting public rights are the foundation of a strong societal structure. Failure to safeguard public rights can lead to unrest and protests in the system. The government should take constructive measures for the public and revisit its stance on their demands, he said.
He noted that people do not protest out of choice but out of compulsion when their voices go unheard and their issues remain unresolved. In such situations, they are forced to resort to protest.
