LAHORE: At least three people were feared killed and 20 others injured when a bomb exploded Tuesday evening inside Lahore Railway Station, said police and rescue officials. “The bomb went off with big bang as soon as Awami Express train, coming from Karachi: stopped at Platform 2 at about 6:40pm,” a railway police official told media on the site.
“Some four people are feared killed and more than 20 others were wounded,” TV channels quoted an official of Naulakha police station. Charred bodies of deceased were lying at site when rescuers arrived, a Pakistan Railways employee said. Injured were rushed to Services and Mayo hospitals. According to eye witnesses noise of blast was heard within 12 kilometers radius of locality.
Rana Afzal, incharge of cargo department, said blast was intense and shattered windowpanes of buildings at railway station and adjoining buildings. Police cordoned off railway station. Rescue staff says number of causalities could rise. Panicked passengers started running away after blast that caused a stampede.
Law enforcers were carrying out search operation at railway station, which was closed for train traffic as precautionary measures. All trains destined for Lahore were stopped at nearby railway stations.
