Call to improve turnaround time of ships at Karachi Port

KARACHI: President of Pakistan Stevedores Conference (G) Ltd, Tariq Haleem has said that when the head of an organization does not pay attention to ground realities, then the organization suffers.

“This is not the case these days at Karachi Port Trust, since the present Chairman Nadir Mumtaz Warraich is a highly proactive leader who pays attention to ground realities. Issues which have been pending for many years are now being addressed. Infrastructure like Berth No. 4 which needed repairs since years, is now being repaired, badly damaged roads in the port are now being repaired, dredging is being done etc. After many years, proper bathroom facilities and drinking water will be available for port workers, he said in a statement on Friday.

He says the important CL gate bridge at East Wharf is finally being repaired and will be fully functional soon. The efficiency of the port is linked to infrastructure conditions and proactive management. “The untapped potential of Karachi Port Trust (the premier port of Pakistan) needs to be urgently exploited, so the right step forward is to improve the infrastructure of the port.”

Haleem said that they needed to improve the turnaround time of the ships calling at Karachi Port. He said that free movement of transport was essential for quick discharging / loading of cargoes, for this backup area at the berths is extremely important.

One of the reasons for low performance is extreme shortage of space at Karachi Port, which is very surprising, considering that Karachi Port is one of the biggest land owners of Karachi, he added.

Tariq said that they now expected the proactive Chairman Nadir Mumtaz Warraich, who had an open door policy, will look into this matter and make sure that KPT land was reclaimed and made available for cargo handling purposes. This will also result in an increase in cargo volumes, as well as a substantial increase in CFS operations, he hoped.

Tariq said: “Our members have invested billions of rupees in stevedoring equipments at Karachi Port. If Chairman KPT gives us more space in the port, we will increase our investments and equipments accordingly.”
