Iran arrests 101 Pakistani immigrants

TAFTAN:Iranian authorities arrested 101 Pakistani immigrants without documents and handed them over to Levies at Taftan border on Thursday.

According to details, a group of 101 Pakistani nationals wanted to proceed to Europe via Iran-Turkey and Greece in search of employment through agents but they were arrested by Iranian officials who later handed them over to Levies on Taftan border. The arrested immigrants were handed over to FIA for further investigation. Most of the detained immigrants belonged to Punjab.

Meanwhile, leader of Balochistan Awami Party, Khalil George has been declared as returned candidate on the seat reserved for non-Muslim in the Provincial Assembly of Balochistan, which fell vacant due to resignation tendered by Danesh Kumar, Ex- MPA, according to a notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan issued today.

Students’ continues hunger strike for rights

KARACHI:Following the 100-hour hunger strike, a group of students headed by Sindh Students’ Council (SSC), completed 24-hour out of 100 hours of hunger strike which began on 1st March to be continued till 4th March, outside Karachi Press Club (KPC) for rights of students including restoration of student unions, provision of hostels and free education for all.

A number of students led by SSC chairman Ali Saqlain Chandio, Hoshu Unar and Akbar Rizvi completed their 24-hours of the hunger strike outside KPC. Different political, social activists, lawyers, and intellectuals visited the students’ hunger strike camp and assured them full support for the sake of their fundamental rights.

Khaliq Junejo, a prominent lawyer and Chairman Jeay Sindh Mahaz visited the camp and said that nowadays students are victims of different problems due to not having the right to unions in educational institutions. He stressed that student unions should be restored immediately to strengthen democratic culture.

Akbar Rizvi division organizer of SSC, said they have been struggling for restoration student unions, demilitarization of campuses, safe release of all missing students, free education for all, provision of hostels and action against the issuance of fake domiciles. Separately, SSC has also staged a 100-hour hunger strike outside Hyderabad Press Club for fundamental rights of students.

Punjab’s Governor, Chief Minister call on NA speaker

LAHORE: Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar called on Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser at Speaker’s House in Islamabad on Monday to hold a detailed discussion over different issues. Both the governor and chief minister appreciated Speaker Asad Qaiser for managing the NA affairs in the best of manner.

 

At the outset, the Speaker termed the unopposed election of Senate candidates in Punjab as appreciable adding that the federal government believes in transparency in Senate election. Election of candidates in other provinces, on the basis of parties’ Senate representation, will be a positive move towards maintaining transparency as questions were raised over the transparency of Senate elections in the past, he maintained. It is a democratic right of all the parties to gain seats in the Senate according to their number of senators in the upper house of the parliament, he continued.

 

The Speaker emphasized that all the political parties, as well as the Election Commission of Pakistan, should play their role in ensuring transparency in the Senate election. Cooperation between all the political forces is desirous to let-out the country of the prevailing crisis. The incumbent government has overcome the economic crisis and the economic indicators confirm that the economy is moving towards development, added Asad Qaiser and emphasized that political turmoil would be a major hurdle in the way of development.

 

Governor Sarwar termed the unopposed election of Senate candidates in Punjab as a symbol of political wisdom adding that raising fingers over past Senate elections is a weakness of the democratic process. It is hoped that opposition will extend cooperation in the larger national interest in future as well, he added.

 

CM Buzdar said the government is willing to take all the political powers along in the province and emphasized that Punjab is moving on the path of development. He said: “Work is in progress on a number of development projects to create more job opportunities. Similarly, the government is working on special economic zones to ensure development while the tourism potential is being optimally exploited as it can play an important role in national development.”

Pakistan signs MoU with UNDP support for satellite imagery use

Islamabad: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC), Government of Pakistan and Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission Pakistan (SUPARCO) with support from UNDP, in Islamabad on Monday.

 

Joudat Ayaz, Additional Secretary (MoCC)/National Project Director (GLOF-II Project) and Brig Tahir Islam, Director SUPARCO signed the MoU, for the use of satellite imagery, received by SUPARCO from various satellites, in mutually agreed areas of application for climate change impacts in Pakistan. The idea is to get an overall clearer picture of the current glacial lakes and associated threats.

 

A management committee comprising of members from MoCC and SUPARCO was also formulated, which has representation from UNDP’s GLOF-II Project. Supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), UNDP’s GLOF-II Project is working to strengthen public services, and to empower communities to identify and manage risks associated with Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and related impacts of climate change.

 

The MoU covers promotion of joint activities of mutual interest and future collaboration in accordance with the respective needs and objectives addressed in the MoU. It also covers cooperation in joint projects as well as envisaging technical capacity building in on-ongoing programs such as – monitoring of glaciers surging and GLOFs; the 10 Billion Tsunami Project; GIS systems management; forest resource assessment in the context of REDD+; environmental impact assessment of conditions along CPEC route and air, and water quality monitoring in major cities of the country. This MoU will remain in force for a period of three years from the signing date.

CM Buzdar says 13 more Covid patients died in Punjab

KARACHI: Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar said in a statement on Monday that 704 new corona cases and 13 more virus patients deaths were reported during the last 24 hours in the Punjab province while 167,77 people were tested during this period.

 

The total number of active corona cases has reached 5,222 as 3,310,924 people have so far been tested in the province. A total of 5,363 people have died of the corona in Punjab, the CM said.

 

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar has extended felicitations to Baloch brethren on the eve of Baloch Culture Day adding that his tribe is also settled in Balochistan.

 

In his message, the CM observed that the traditional culture and heritage of the province of Balochistan depicts peace and unity. The purpose of celebrating this day is to promote brotherhood, affinity and intern-provincial harmony, he added and emphasized that the nations which remember their culture thrive.

 

All the Pakistani communities are conjoined in a strong bond of unity and the traits of patriotism and love are very conspicuous in the Baloch culture, he continued. The culture of Balochistan enjoys a unique identity as the province has remained an abode of traditions and culture. The days of other cultures will also be celebrated with full zeal, announced the CM.

Covid in Sindh claims three more lives, infects 146

KARACHI: As many as three more patients of Coronavirus died overnight across Sindh, lifting the death toll to 4,353 while 146 new cases emerged when 7,315 tests were conducted.

 

This was stated by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in a statement issued here on Monday. He added that three more patients of COVID-19 lost their lives in Sindh, lifting the death toll to 4,353 that constituted 1.7 percent death rate.

 

Shah said that 7,315 samples were tested which detected 146 cases that constituted 2 percent current detection rate. He added that so far 3,027,006 tests had been conducted against which 258,411 cases were diagnosed, of them 94 percent or 242,214 patients had recovered, including 350 overnight.

 

The CM said that currently, 11,844 patients were under treatment, of them 11,655 were in home isolation, eight at isolation centers and 348 at different hospitals. He added that the condition of 315 patients was stated to be critical, including 48 shifted to ventilators.

 

According to the statement, out of 146 new cases, 62 have been detected from Karachi, including 26 from East, 17 Korangi, 8 South, 7 Central, 3 West and 1 Malir. Thatta has 12, Hyderabad 9, Matiari 8, Dadu 7, Sujawal 6, Tando Allahyar 5, Mirpurkhas 4, Ghotki, Larkana, Naushero Feroze, Umerkot and Jacobabad 3 each, Jamshoro, Khairpur and Kamber 2 each, Badin and Shaheed Benazirabad 1 each. The chief minister urged people of the province to follow SOPs.
