Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani attended the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV today at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, marking the commencement of the new papacy.
The event, witnessed by approximately 250,000 people, included numerous global leaders and dignitaries. Gillani’s presence underscored Pakistan’s commitment to interfaith harmony and respect for the Catholic community. His participation demonstrated the nation’s dedication to fostering dialogue and mutual understanding among various religious traditions.
The distinguished assembly included US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several other prominent international figures. European royalty, such as King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, also attended.
Pope Leo XIV, the first pontiff with US-Peruvian citizenship, highlighted themes of peace, compassion, and unity in his homily. His message emphasized addressing global challenges through dialogue and cooperation.
During his visit, Gillani will engage in bilateral meetings with Vatican officials and international counterparts to discuss shared interests, including peace promotion and interfaith collaboration.
