Children Hospital closes emergency department due to fund shortage

Karachi:The administration of Sindh Government Children Hospital North Nazimabad Karachi run by Poverty Eradication Initiative (PEI) has shut down its emergency department over non-payment of three months salaries.

The children who require emergency care are being referred to other public and private sector facilities since last couple of days as PEI management has closed the emergency services in the protest. The doctors, nurses and paramedical staff working in emergency department have refused to work till clearance of outstanding dues.

The doctors, nurses and paramedical staff working under Poverty Eradication Initiative have not been paid salaries for three months by Sindh government. More than 300 employees, including doctors nurses, paramedical and administrative staff, have been deprived of salaries due to financial crises.

Sources at Children Hospital told PPI that Sindh government had not released last quarter fund of fiscal year 2019-20 which had created fund problem and PEI administration is unable to pay salaries of staff.

The hospital management has also unable to provide medicines and surgical disposals due to unavailability of funds. The poor patient attendants have compelled to buy drip, drip set, canola and surgical disposable from local medical stores due to unavailability of such items in the emergency department.

Sources said the Sindh government had not released funds of the hospital and administration was facing problems in continuing services in those circumstances. Chief Executive Director, Poverty Eradication Initiative (PEI), Dr. Muhammad Toufiq, was not available for comments.
